Bringing Down the House

EVERYTHING HE NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT LIFE, SHE LEARNED IN PRISON.

Attorney Peter Sanderson (Steve Martin) finds out that the woman heā€™s been wooing in an Internet chat room really is a big, black ex-convict (Queen Latifah) who wants his help. This comedy of culture clashes has stereotypes, an obvious formula and a tendency to repeat some of the jokes over and over… but I still like it, so help me God. It is pretty funny and who can resist Martin as the uptight lawyer, Latifah as the tough ex-convict, Joan Plowright as the archconservative heiress and Eugene Levy as Martinā€™s kinky colleague? They make it work and even the ending holds up reasonably well.Ā

2003-U.S. 105 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Adam Shankman. Cast: Steve Martin (Peter Sanderson), Queen Latifah (Charlene Morton), Eugene Levy (Howie Rottman), Joan Plowright, Jean Smart, Kimberly J. Brown.

Trivia: Latifah co-executive produced the film.Ā
