First Daughter

THE GIRL WHO ALWAYS STOOD OUT IS FINALLY GETTING THE CHANCE TO FIT IN.

Samantha Mackenzie (Katie Holmes), the President’s daughter, goes to college with her Secret Service detail in tow; she starts dating a guy (Marc Blucas) but there’s something he’s not telling her. It’s hard to see what director Forest Whitaker saw in this shallow romantic comedy. It shares themes with another film from that year, Chasing Liberty, and eventually it turns into a second-rate Bodyguard (1992), but I’m sure preteens will like it well enough. Still, was it necessary to make Blucas’s character so stupid and unprofessional?

2004-U.S. 104 min. Color. Directed by Forest Whitaker. Cast: Katie Holmes (Samantha Mackenzie), Marc Blucas (James Lansome), Amerie (Mia Thompson), Michael Keaton, Margaret Colin, Lela Rochon Fuqua.
