The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill, but Came Down a Mountain

A ROMANTIC COMEDY ABOUT A TOWN THAT WOULDN’T GIVE UP. A MAN WHO COULDN’T GET OUT. AND THE MOUNTAIN THAT BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.Ā

Two cartographers (Hugh Grant, Ian McNeice) arrive in Wales to survey the height of a local mountain… only to find that it is a hill, not a mountain, something the villagers refuse to acknowledge. Christopher Mongerā€™s film is based on fact; set during World War I, it portrays a village, Ffynnon Gawr, fighting for the pride of the community. Itā€™s a simple story but also fun and engaging. The filmmakers treat Tara Fitzgerald as eye candy, more or less, but Grant is as charmingly befuddled as in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), and Colm Meaney as amusingly obstinate as in The Snapper (1993). Ā

1995-Britain. 99 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed byĀ Christopher Monger. Cast: Hugh Grant (Reginald Anson), Tara Fitzgerald (Betty of Cardiff), Colm Meaney (Morgan the Goat), Ian McNeice, Ian Hart, Kenneth Griffith.
