American Psycho

KILLER LOOKS.

americanpsychoReading Bret Easton Ellis’s novel about a 27-year-old commodities broker on Wall Street who has everything but is most passionate in life about rape and murder, throws you into various states of joy, depression, anger and sickness. Some chapters are damn near impossible to read. The vilest scenes don’t make it to the movie (how could they?), but the 1980s satire survives, with consumerism depicted in revolting ways. This adaptation doesn’t hit you in the guts the way the novel does, but the source material is strong enough and the film has funny and clever scenes. Christian Bale gives a forceful performance.

2000-U.S. 97 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Mary Harron. Screenplay: Mary Harron, Guinevere Turner. Novel: Bret Easton Ellis. Cast: Christian Bale (Patrick Bateman), Willem Dafoe (Donald Kimball), Jared Leto (Paul Allen), Reese Witherspoon, Samantha Mathis, Chloë Sevigny… Justin Theroux.

Trivia: Leonardo DiCaprio was allegedly considered for the part of Bateman, with Oliver Stone as director. Later a Broadway musical. Followed by a direct-to-video sequel, American Psycho II: All American Girl (2002). Sean Bateman, Patrick’s younger brother, was the main protagonist in The Rules of Attraction (2002).
