Star Trek: First Contact

PLANET EARTH. POPULATION 9 BILLION. NONE HUMAN.

The eighth Star Trek movie is the first to stand on its own with the crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation. This occasionally slow chapter harks back to a couple of episodes where Picard (Patrick Stewart) fell victim to dangerous aliens that assimilate bodies; those Borg return in this movie, causing the Enterprise to go back in time to find a way to save Earth from becoming a slave colony. The screenplay is good enough, balancing two storylines where among other things we get to see how warp speed was invented. The visual effects are outstanding, as always.

1996-U.S. 110 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Jonathan Frakes. Cast: Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Brent Spiner (Data), LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden… James Cromwell.

Trivia: Followed by Star Trek: Insurrection (1998).
