Four Rooms

TWELVE OUTRAGEOUS GUESTS. FOUR SCANDALOUS REQUESTS. AND ONE LONE BELLHOP, IN HIS FIRST DAY ON THE JOB, WHO’S IN FOR THE WILDEST NEW YEAR’S EVE OF HIS LIFE.

Bellboy Ted (Tim Roth) works on New Year’s Eve and has to deal with a bunch of witches, an odd married couple, two young troublemakers and, lastly, a couple of Hollywood players. This anthology gathered four young and hip indie filmmakers to shoot one episode each, all set in a hotel room. Robert Rodriguez’ segment, with the unruly kids, is amusing, but that’s it. Roth delivers an annoying performance, the cast is generally wasted and the whole project is pointless.

1995-U.S. 98 min. Color. Written and directed by Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino. Cast: Tim Roth (Ted), Antonio Banderas (Man), Jennifer Beals (Angela), Paul Calderon, Sammi Davis, Amanda de Cadenet… Valeria Golino, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Marisa Tomei, Quentin Tarantino, Salma Hayek. Cameo: Bruce Willis.

Trivia: Steve Buscemi was reportedly considered for the part of Ted. Bruce Willis earns no credit because he did the film for free, thereby violating SAG rules; they decided not to sue if the actor’s name was excluded from the credits. Rodriguez’ segment inspired the director to make Spy Kids (2001).

Razzie: Worst Supporting Actress (Madonna).
