That’s Entertainment!

BOY! DO WE NEED IT NOW!

thatsentertainmentA popular compilation of memorable clips from nearly one hundred MGM musicals, serving the purpose of celebrating the studio’s 50th anniversary. No other studio in Hollywood managed to make musicals this good, which means we’re treated to a peek at the very best Tinseltown has to offer in the genre. Co-hosting this feast is director Jack Haley, Jr.’s then-wife, Liza Minnelli, along with some of the biggest names from Hollywood’s golden era. It’s great to see the ageing superstars reminisce about the good old days and introduce one another’s greatest achievements. Rarely seen footage blends with famous sequences that are still capable of exciting viewers. It’s all fabulously entertaining but there are moments when this feels like a very sentimental staff party at MGM.

1974-U.S. 132 min. Color. Part Widescreen. Produced by David Melnick, Jack Haley, Jr. Written and directed by Jack Haley, Jr. Featuring: Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Liza Minnelli, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra, James Stewart, Elizabeth Taylor… Peter Lawford, Donald O’Connor.

Trivia: Followed by two other compilations, starting with That’s Entertainment, Part 2 (1976). Haley, Jr. also made That’s Dancing! (1985).
