The Ref

HE TOOK THEM HOSTAGE. THEY DROVE HIM CRAZY.

therefGus, (Denis Leary), a burglar, is forced to take the Chasseurs (Kevin Spacey, Judy Davis) hostage, but doesn’t count on their constant bickering. Jonathan Demme’s nephew Ted was not of the same caliber as his Oscar-winning uncle, but this isn’t entirely forgettable. He has a slapstick approach to the problems of modern society and the actors are pretty funny. The film turns earnest after a while, dealing with suburban families living a lie and the differences between the haves and the have-nots, but it lacks certain depth.

1994-U.S. 93 min. Color. Directed by Ted Demme. Cast: Denis Leary (Gus), Judy Davis (Caroline Chasseur), Kevin Spacey (Lloyd Chasseur), Robert J. Steinmiller, Jr., Glynis Johns, Raymond J. Barry… Christine Baranski, J.K. Simmons.

Trivia: In the original ending, Leary was caught, which was to prove to the couple’s son that crime doesn’t pay. Simmons’s feature film debut.
